Born in Chicago on Halloween, October 31, 1981, to parents, Will, a retired army sergeant, and Renee Golden, who works for Chicago's Board of Education. Steven is the tallest member of his family, standing 7 feet tall. Steven has a younger sister, Michelle, an older brother Eric, a Daughter Nylaa, and a son Steven Jr. During Hunter's High School Days at Provisio East High, he competed against former teammate Quentin Richardson, before they both enrolled at DePaul University. Steven began his NBA career with the Orlando Magic in 2001 before joining the Phoenix Suns in 2004. He acquired the nickname "Postman" due to his defensive presence, premier shot blocking and offensive post moves. In August of 2005, Steven Hunter was signed as a free agent by the Philedelphia 76ers. In 2007, he found a new home with the Denver Nuggets.

Not only is Steven a force on the court, he is making his mark in the community as well. In November 2004, Steven was named the NBA's Community Assist Award winner. This award recognizes players who display a passion for their communities and take pride in their charitable efforts. He followed up this award by being nominated for the Sporting News NBA "Good Guy" award for the 2004-05 season.
